From the kitchen and bedroom are large windows with views to the beautiful surroundings
– Lake Myvatn and Hverfjall. From the kitchen there is direct access to a terrace through
a large sliding door. The small footprint of the house is balanced by a higher ceiling height,
so the interior of the cabin fells spacious and comfortable.
With thoughts on the Icelandic volcanoes with ash and lava lying like a blanket in the
landscape, the cabin has been named Aska, which translated means ash. The cabin is
covered with burned pine cladding – Shou sugi ban, an ancient Japanese technique – where
the tree is impregnated through charring of the outer layer of the tree. Using this technique,
a sustainable and robust façade with a long life is made of 100% natural materials.
In contrast to the dark cladding, the inside is covered with light pine-plywood that adds
light and warmth to the cabin's interior.
As an extrusion of the landscape the roof is planted with vegetation from the surrounding
area so the cabin integrates with the Icelandic landscape.

'Elements' is a series 3 small cabins standing in the common landscapes of Iceland. Working with
the natural elements – water, fire & air – as a starting point and the main inspiration for the design of
the cabins it enabled us to design according the fundamental principles, used in the nature.
The purpose of the study was to enhance the atmospheres of the natural settings while inserting
an architectural piece – a place to stay, sleep, and enjoy the unique environment.
Andrúm is the 1st cabin in the Elements series. The Cabin is located on the edge of the mountain,
where the dense forest ends and meets the slope. Intimate forest turns into the windy open landscape
with a possibility for an undisrupted panoramic view. The experience of meeting the cabin starts
with a path in the forest that becomes a bridge, which is designed to be an entering point for the
cabin as well as a panoramic viewpoint on its end. The cabin is attached to the bridge and floats
in the air, giving a feeling of lightness.
The cabin can accommodate up to 5 people and is defined by the big openings for panoramic views,
double height dining space and a floating window corner, where one can feel being levitated in the
air. Thin steel columns and beams, together with the bridge are designed to be the main structure, as
well as the compositional element of the facades. The wooden cabin volume is attached to it.

Kerið is the 2nd cabin in the Elements series. The Cabin is standing in a valley, where stones
and grass meet watery areas. This area is so vivid – green grass and bushes, steams, small blue
lakes and rivers, springs - all blending together.
The concept of the cabin comes from the wish to feel the water, almost be in it, that is why the floor
level is lowered and the whole cabin is dug down. The cabin volume is wrapping around a central
element – a pool – in this way all the functions have a direct visual connection to the water.
The cabin is designed to accommodate five to six people. It has a kitchen, a dining room and a
small spa area. Inbuilt furniture’s – kitchen, dry and wet benches play a big role in the design as
they enable the continuous unique situation of ones’ being just nearby the water.
The chosen material is concrete combined with the warm wooden cladding inside. The shape
of the roof is designed to collect the water to the pool area and have a feeling of the never-
ending ‘water curtain’ when it rains.
